Ex-wife of DSK, 'disgusted' by sex scandal movie

Welcome to New York, inspired by the sordid sex scandal that brought down IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn got its opening in Cannes on Saturday. But the highly-anticipated film has received a luke-warm response.

Critics have called it a "grotesque caricature." Dominique Strauss Kahn's ex-wife Anne Sinclair, says it's disgusting.   

The movie inspired by the sordid sex scandal that brought down IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn shows scenes of sex parties, bottles of champagne and prostitutes.

"I don't object to the (film's) filth, I vomit on it," Sinclair said on her French website Huffington Post on Sunday. "But I won't give the producers the satisfaction of taking them to court."

Welcome to New York, directed by Abel Ferrara, claims to be a fictional account of the downfall of former presidential hopeful Dominique Strauss-Kahn. It stars French veteran actor Gérard Depardieu as Strauss-Kahn who bears a strong resemblance to the former IMF chief.

It opens with Depardieu at his Washington office, a high-end brothel of sorts in which the ­protagonist can hardly keep his hands off his sexy staff. It then cuts to a posh Manhattan hotel room, where Strauss-Kahn is accused of sexually assaulting hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo in 2011.

Criminal charges against him were eventually dropped, but scenes from the film- which see Diallo screaming 'no' and calling for help, suggest Strauss-Kahn was guilty of attempted rape. A step away from the truth that his supporters have strongly criticized.

Far from being shown in one of the big, plush theatres in the festival hall at Cannes, the film was screened in a small, local cinema. Banned from public theaters, it's going direct to DVD and will be releasd on web streaming this weekend.
