French police used water cannon and teargas on Poland and Ukraine fans who clashed yesterday in the southern city of Marseille ahead of the match between their teams. Police said they were attacked after trying to separate rival groups of supporters at a roundabout near Marseille's Stade Vélodrome with bottles thrown and a rubbish bin set alight.

Elsewhere, in the city of Lens, where Turkey played Czech Republic, 18 people were arrested for using or possessing flares, police said.

Five were Turkish fans detained inside the stadium.

Meanwhile, Russian football fan leader Alexander Shprygin was expelled from France for the second time in four days on Tuesday.

Shprygin, who is linked to far-right groups in Russia, was caught after arriving overland in France to watch Russia's defeat against Wales on Monday night.

Shprygin was among fans rounded up and expelled following violence between Russian and England supporters on 11 June in Marseille.
