The Finnish driver now holds a three second lead over the Frenchman in the eighth rally of this season.

Out of the four stages held on Saturday so far, Latvala and Ogier won two each.

Speaking about Saturday’s remaining stages, defending champion Ogier, who won the event in 2013, said that his ability to attack will depend on the weather conditions.

Latvala and Ogier, who drive VW Polo, are followed by Britain's Kris Meeke 33.5sec behind.

With just five races left in the season, Latvala needs to win this event if he wants to close the championship points gap to Ogier, who leads the overall standings by a comfortable 78 points over his nearest rival Andreas Mikkelsen.

Latvala is fourth with 66 points.

In the manufacturers’ standings, Volkswagen have a commanding 89 points lead over Citroen and with its drivers Latvala and Ogier occupying the top two spots in Finland, the German team is certain to extend this lead further.
