All-rounder Mitchell Marsh was the unlikely hero for the visitors as he claimed the two prized wickets of Ben Stokes and Captain Alastair Cook who scored 87 and 96 respectively.

Resuming at their overnight score of 85 for four, Cook and Stokes steadied the innings with a solid 145-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Just when it seemed Stokes would cruise to the three-figure mark, Marsh produced a wicket-taking delivery that put an end to the English batsman’s hopes.

Jos Buttler didn’t last long as he fell for 13 runs to off-spinner Nathan Lyon. While wickets were tumbling at the other end, Cook remained rock solid.

He was just four runs away from reaching his 28th Test century, when he succumbed to Marsh, getting dismissed in a similar fashion to Stokes. Cook batted for nearly six hours and faced 233 balls.

Moeen Ali scored a quick 39 off 57 balls before falling LBW to Josh Hazelwood who soon claimed his third victim of the innings after dismissing Mark Wood for four.

Mitchell Johnson took three wickets while Mitchell Starc claimed one.

Australia trail England in the five match series 1-0 after losing the first Test in Cardiff.
