The Shura Council in Saudi Arabia is a consultative body that has the power to, among other things, propose laws to the King. In the Saudi Kingdom, women are afforded very few rights. So being in public office is extremely rare for a woman. But last January, in an unprecedented move, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz appointed 30 women to the council, filling a fifth of the 150 seats. RFI spoke to Hanan Al Ahmadi, one of the first women to be appointed.
