In Belleville neighborhood, North African Jews struggle to hold onto their history

By Rebecca Rosman

Prior to the creation of Israel in 1948, there were up to 800,000 Jews living across lands that now make up the Arabic-speaking world. The majority have since left, mostly for Israel, North America, or Europe. Those that immigrated to France mainly came from the former French colonies of Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, known as the 'Maghreb' region. RFI’s Rebecca Rosman recently visited Paris’s Belleville neighborhood, where the majority of North African Jews living in France now reside, to get a closer look at the community.
