“She had appealed the first time. Later, she withdrew it. But she finally filed a new appeal against the Melun court’s decision to deny her parole,” the prosecutor of Melun said.

On August 12, a court in the town of Melun, which is located around 50 km south east of Paris, refused to grant parole to the 68-year-old Sauvage, who became a symbol of domestic violence and was partially pardoned by French President François Hollande.

She had 10 days to appeal the court’s decision, which she did on Friday, according to the prosecutor who made a “cross appeal” to support her request for parole.

Sauvage was sentenced on appeal in December to ten years imprisonment by a court in the department of Loir-et-Cher for the murder of her husband, who beat her for years and had raped their daughters.

The sentencing had generated a wave of support for her. It led to the demand by her daughters for a presidential pardon which was supported by many parliamentarians and personalities in France.

On January 31, Hollande granted a “partial” release which allowed her to immediately submit a request for parole.

Following the decision of the Melun court, a group supporting Sauvage launched a new petition calling for her “immediate release”. The petition has so far collected 234,000 signatures. The group has announced a rally on September 10 in Paris.
