Female French journalists denounce sexism from male politicians
Female French journalists from the main media houses have signed a petition published on Tuesday to denounce sexism from politicians.
Issued on:
“Get your paws off me!” heads daily Libération in its Tuesday edition where about 40 female reporters detailed sexist behaviour in the corridor of power.
One reports that while working at the National Assembly she has been greeted with a “Ah but you’re on the game, hustling for a client” by a lawmaker.
Although the petition condemns bawdy remarks and wandering hands, it also denounces that little has changed after the downfall of International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn - whose notorious sexual appetite has landed him in court on several occasions.
There are also condescending remarks such as “That is such a girl question” in press conferences wrote the journalists in Libération.
Many politicians do not act this way but “these practices (…) that happen every day in the street, factories and offices, involve elected officials charged with creating policy and that leads us to denounce them,” said the journalists.
