Normans fight for the right to keep making Madeleines

Issued on:

Madeleines are one of France's best-loved cakes, awaking fond memories in author Marcel Proust and millions of other sweet-toothed French citizens. And yet one of the oldest Madeleine factories, Jeannette in Normandy, went bankrupt this year. New investors wanted to relocate to Algeria or Bulgaria but Jeannette's workers occupied the factory in January and are still fighting to keep production in Normandy. A commercial court in Caen will decide on their fate today.
