Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) – a so-called police of the police – will investigate the workings of France’s anti-narcotic bureau.

“The police have to be as irreproachable as it is efficient,” Cazeneuve said in an interview with the French newspaper Le Parisien.

Cazeneuve added that police methods for holding the drugs need to be changed.

For example, in some cases, only samples could be conserved while the rest could be destroyed.

He also wants to modify access to the rooms where evidence bags – such as those containing drugs – are held.

The cocaine was stolen on the night of 24 to 25 July from a room in which only three people had keys.

Cazeneuve immediately reacted to the arrest on Saturday of narcotics officer Jonathan G., 34, on suspicion of stealing the cocaine cache.
