Police say the drugs arrived at the port of Le Havre on Tuesday on a cargo ship from Chile.

One-point-four tonnes of cocaine was hidden in a shipment of tyres.

The drugs were then loaded onto a truck bound for Spain.

Bulgarian authorities alerted French police, who followed the truck for more than 400 kilometres before stopping the truck in central France.

Police arrested two Spaniards on the truck.

Two Bulgarians believed to be the ringleaders were caught in eastern Bulgaria, while police in Spain say they expect to make more arrests.

The previous record cocaine haul in France was the seizure of 1.3 tonnes of the drug hidden in 30 suitcases on an Air France flight from Venezuela last September.

More than 20 people were jailed in that case, including an Air France employee in Caracas.
