Police say the Eurolines bus carrying 44 passengers was travelling from Marseille to Murcie in Spain when it broke through the crash barrier and overturned on a highway near Fitou, in the southern department of Aude, early on Sunday morning.

The two dead were a Frenchman and a Spanish woman. Two people were also seriously injured in the accident.

Investigators are examining whether driver fatigue may have caused the accident, saying no drugs nor alcohol were found in the Spanish driver’s system.

The driver reportedly told investigators there was an altercation with a passenger who took control of the wheel.

But prosecutors are reportedly sceptical of this explanation.

It was the second deadly road accident in Aude this weekend. Five people died when they lost control of their car near Carcassonne on Saturday.
