Ukraine series, part 3

Issued on:

With freezing nights fast approaching in eastern Ukraine, most of the 1.4 million internally displaced persons (IDP’s) will seek humanitarian assistance this coming winter. The figure, according to the European Commission (EU), does not include locals Ukrainians who face the same problems as IDP’s. Some two thirds of IDP’s are pensioners and approximately 13% are children. The EU with United Nations (UN) agencies and partners face an uphill struggle in providing basic food for the internally displaced. The UN’s World Food program believes food security might deteriorate with unemployment and reduced disposal income as the main causes. RFI’s Filip Warwick travelled to Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine to find out more.
