Following their humiliating defeats in the first two Tests, Australia made five changes in the team. The decision paid dividends spectacularly as Australia excelled in both the bowling and batting departments in the day and night Test match.
Australia had seized the initiative by claiming a 124-run lead in the first innings. South Africa’s second innings was no better than their first as they were bowled out for 250 runs.
Opener Stephen Cook, who scored 104 and was the last South African to get out, was the only batsman who offered any resistance.
Left arm pace bowler Mitchell Starc was again the best performer for Australia claiming four wickets while off-spinner Nathan Lyon took three.
Chasing 127 to win, Australian opening batsmen David Warner and debutant Matt Renshaw scored 64 runs for the first wicket before Warner was run out.
Usman Khawaja, who scored a magnificent 145 runs in the first innings, didn’t trouble the scorers as he was dismissed for zero. However, captain Steve Smith scored a quick 40 to ensure there were no further hiccups.
