Bournemouth resurgence continues with win over Manchester United

The unpredictability of the English Premier League was in evidence on Saturday night when newly promoted Bournemouth secured their second successive victory over one of the division's heavyweights.

Bournemouth rose to 14th in the English Premier League on Saturday night after beating Manchester United 2-1.

It was the second major scalp in as many weekends for Eddie Howe’s Premier League debutants.

Last Saturday they beat the champions Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.

In that game in west London, the visitors were doughty in defence and snatched a winner eight minutes from time.

Against Manchester United, they were a constant threat.

Junior Stanislas opened the scoring for the hosts within two minutes. But United were level just over 20 minutes later courtesy of Marouane Fellaini.

When Joshua King gave Bournemouth the lead nine minutes into the second half, there was still plenty of time for United to turn the game around. But for the second time in five days they slumped to defeat.

The setback at Bournemouth completes a miserable week for United. Louis van Gaal’s men crashed out of the Uefa Champions League and into the Europa League on Tuesday night following a 3-2 defeat at Wolfsburg.

They will drop to fifth in the Premier League if Tottenham Hotspur beat Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

With leaders Leicester City entertaining Chelsea on Monday night, Arsenal will take over pole position on Sunday provided they take all three points from their visit to bottom of the table Aston Villa.
