The man, who was 31-years-old but has not been named, died after two police officers fired about 10 bullets at him as he tried to attack them, according to police sources speaking to the Info Paris-Normandie website.

The police were sent to a high-crime area of Le Havre at 1.00am after a phone call from two girls who said they had been attacked by a man wandering the streets, the site reports.

They found the man on the road and he threw himself at their car, trying to stab the window.

He then attacked a passerby, stabbing him 22 times, according to police sources.

When the police ordered him to stop he attacked them and they shot him.

The life of the man he attacked, who is 32-years-old, was not in danger on Tuesday morning but he was in hospital with multiple wounds, including several to the face, Info Paris-Normandie reported.

The incident was caught on CCTV cameras and police unions say that it is clear the officers fired in self-defence.
