Hello everyone!

Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday, at 6:15, 6:45, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.

Fabulous news! We have a shortwave frequency again! It’s 13725 kHz on the 22m band, and you can hear us between 6.00 and 7.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Cuba, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, and the US, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know … and be sure and send us your reception reports. Maybe we can get more time, which would be wonderful.

This week’s quiz: 20 June was World Refugee Day, and the day we opened our second RFI Listeners Club in a refugee camp - the CEPROJED RFI Club, with Issa Byamungu as the president. The camp, for Burundian refugees, is in Nyarugusu, Tanzania (the first club is in the Democratic Republic of Congo, for people from the Central African Republic). I asked you on 20 June a question about The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

You were to write in with the date the UNHCR was founded, as well as the names and nationalities of the first Commissioner and the present Commissioner.

The answers are: The UNHCR was originally established in 1950, with Dutch politician and diplomat Gerrit Jan van Heuven Goedhart as its Commissioner. The current Commissioner, who has been serving since 2005, is António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres. Oliveira Guterres is Portuguese; he’s a former politician, prime minister, and the former President of the Socialist International.

The UNHCR is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and has won two Nobel Peace Prizes, one in 1954, and again in 1981.

The winners this week are: Mrs Farida Yasmin, from Kaptai, Bangladesh - a member of the Kaptai RFI Fan Club, which won the 2014 -2015 Most Active RFI Club award; Marcos Brito Romero, from Holguin, Cuba – a member of the RFI Club Cuba; Riaz Ahmad Khan from Sheikhupura, Pakistan; Tumahole Wilson Tumahole from Maseru, Lesotho, and Mr Ujwal Babu from Kathmandu, Nepal.

Congratulations winners!
