Seven million still without shelter in flood-hit Pakistan

At least seven million people are still without shelter in Pakistan almost three months after floods devastated the country, the United Nations said on Tuesday. UN spokeswoman Stacey Winston also confirmed that an estimated 14 million people were in need of immediate humanitarian assistance.

Speaking at a news conference in Islamabad, Winston said that the floods had destroyed and damaged over 1.9 million homes.

UN agencies say the flooding affected around 21 million people. The UN appealed for two billion dollars (1.4 billion euros) in aid but so far only about 35 per cent of that figure has been raised.

Winston said the UN has distributed food rations among 2.5 million people in 39 flood-affected areas this month.

Torrential rains began falling on northwest Pakistan in July, resulting in floods that moved steadily south.
