The French Foreign Ministry picked up the alarm signal, the French embassy in Ecuador said.

An Ecuadoran police helicopter which was on a rescue training mission in the area was dispatched to find them.

No details are available of the age, identity or employment of the climbers. Nor is it known what injuries they sustained but they were taken to a hospital in Riobamba, 155 kilometres south of the capital, Quito, according to the embassy.
