French retirement home throws out 94-year-old woman on winter weekend

A French minister has slammed a private retirement home for throwing out a 94-year-old woman because her family had failed to pay its bills. The eviction was a breach of the law and a violation of human dignity, the minister for the elderly, Michèle Delaunay, said Monday.

Management at the Villa Bonsoleil retirement home in Chaville, near Paris, said it regretted an “inappropriate decision” but pointed out that family members had been repeatedly contacted about failure to pay bills that mounted up to 40,000 euros of debt.

On Saturday retirement home employees took the woman to the home of one of her sons but found no-one in.

They called the Villa Bonsoleil but the room had already been let to a new arrival, the Echo républicain regional paper reports, so they took her to a hospital in nearby Châteaudun.

The home claims that one of her sons now refuses to let her return.

Delaunay on Monday called the action “a violation of the law and human dignity” and said that legal action could be taken under France’s law that bans evictions during winter.
