Nepal’s new prime minister, your voices, and music for reflection

By Susan Owensby

This week on The Sound Kitchen, you’ll hear the answer to the question about Nepal’s new prime minister. There’s a “listener bouquet”, some great music, and of course, the new quiz question. So click on that little “Listen” arrow above, and join in!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday, at 6:15, 7:15, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.

Fabulous news! We have a shortwave frequency again! It’s 13725 kHz on the 22m band, and you can hear us between 6.00 and 7.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Cuba, Denmark, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Sierra Leone, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know … and be sure and send us your reception reports. Maybe we can get more time, which would be wonderful.

Club News: We have five new official RFI English Listeners Clubs! Welcome to
the Radio France International Online Visitors Club in Sahiwal, Pakistan, Amir Jameel, president; the RFI Web Visitors Club in Mailsi, Pakistan, Abid Hussain Sajid, president; the Golden DX Club in Murshidibad, India, Siddhartha Sarkar, president; the RFI Listeners Club in Jamshedpur, India, S B Sharma, president, and the Nilshagor RFI Fan Club in Nilphamari, Bangladesh, Shahanaj Parvin Sathi, president.

To find out how you can create an RFI Club or transform your existing listening club into an RFI Club, go to the link at the bottom of this page.

This week’s quiz: On 17 October, my good colleague Daniel Finnan was in the Sound Kitchen cooking with me. He asked you a question about Nepal, whose parliament had just elected a new prime minister. Daniel asked you to send in the name of the new prime minister and the name of his party, as well as the name of the man he defeated, and the name of his party.

The answer is: Nepal’s new prime minister, elected last month, is Khadga Prasad Oli. The name of his party is the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist).
The country’s previous prime minister is Sushil Koirala. The name of his party is the Nepali Congress party.

The winners this week are: Raz Dangol from Kathmandu, Nepal and Mohammad Dibos from Naogaon, Bangladesh, and three RFI Listeners Club members: Chaitali Sarkar from Murshidabad, India; Ammad Saleem from Lahore, Pakistan, and Richard Wasajja from Masaka, Uganda (who sent his quiz answer to The Sound Kitchen mobile phone with a text message – you can do that, too … see below for the phone number).

Congratulations winners!
