Hello everyone!

Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday, at our new times: 6:15, 6:45, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.

Fabulous news! We have a shortwave frequency again! It’s 13725 kHz on the 22m band, and you can hear us between 6.00 and 7.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from Cuba, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Bangladesh, India, the UK, Sweden, the US, Peru, and the United Arab Emirates, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know …

This week’s quiz: On 13 June, I asked you a political question about Turkey. On 7 June, the country held its legislative elections – elections which were seen as a referendum on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s tenure. Voter turnout was 86 per cent. In those elections, Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party, or AKP, lost its majority in Parliament. It still won the most seats by far, but it lost holding the majority of them – and that was my question to you. You were to send in the name of the party which won 13 per cent of the vote, thereby winning representation in the country’s Parliament, which means the AKP no longer holds the majority of seats.

The answer is:  The Kurdish People’s Democratic Party, or the HDP. The HDP – Turkey’s Kurdish minority party - aligned with liberals and secular Turks opposed to Mr Erdogan’s leadership. They won 80 seats.

Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party entered the election with 327 seats in the 550-seat parliament. It emerged with 258. This is the first time in 13 years that Erdogan’s party has not held the majority of seats in the parliament.

The winners this week are: Riaz Ahmad Khan, of the RFI Listeners Club in Sheikhupura, Pakistan; Ms Muni Akter, from Naogaon, and Shobuz Mahmud, the President of the Neer Unity DX Club, in Jamalpur, both in Bangladesh; RFI Listeners Club members Zenon Teles, of the Christian - Marxist – Leninist - Maoist Association of Listening DX-ers, in Goa, India, and Jean-Maurice Devault from Montreal, Canada.

Congratulations, winners!
