Hello everyone!

Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday, at our new times: 6:15, 6:45, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.

Fabulous news! We have a shortwave frequency again! It’s 13725 kHz on the 22m band, and you can hear us between 6.00 and 7.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from New Zealand, Japan, Bangladesh and the UK, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know …

This week’s quiz: On 23 May, I asked you about Burundi, the Great Lakes African country which was at that moment in the throes of a coup attempt. My question to you was three-fold: you were to send me the name of Burundi’s sitting president, the name of the general who headed up the coup attempt, and the name of the RFI English journalist who was on the ground reporting on it for you.

And those three names are: Pierre Nkurunziza - the current president of Burundi.

Maj. Gen. Godefroid Niyombare - the man who headed up the coup attempt.

And Daniel Finnan, the RFI English reporter who was there to report on it all for you.

Daniel Finnan has been with the RFI English service since 2007, and has been on numerous reporting missions for us: he was in Egypt for the Arab Spring, and for the first and second round of elections right after; he was in South Africa at the death of Nelson Mandela; in Sierra Leone to report on the Ebola virus … it’s a long list. Not only is Daniel Finnan a conscientious reporter, he is also a very nice man, and I am glad he is my colleague.

The winners this week are: Jahangir Alam Manto, the president of the Kaptai RFI Fan Club in Kaptai, Bangladesh – and the winner of the 2014 / 2015 “Most Active RFI English Listeners Club” award. By the way, you can see a picture of Jahangir and his lovely wife Ferdousi on the RFI English and the Sound Kitchen FaceBook pages – they are certainly a handsome pair!

The other winners this week are: P Sivashanmugham, from Tamilnadu, India; Dr DW Nabi from Middlesex, in the UK; RFI Club member Gregory Lagat, from Nairobi, Kenya, and George Eta from Tiko, in the SW region of Cameroon - who sent his answer in via text, to the Sound Kitchen mobile phone (see below on how you can send your answer to The Sound Kitchen by text, too).

Congratulations, winners!
