Orange Blossom’s unchained Egyptian electro

Issued on:

The French collective Orange Blossom travel the world working with largely unknown, traditional musicians, mixing everything from Middle Eastern classical, west African polyrhythms, electronica and unbridled rock. Their original, unclassifiable sound captured the attention of ex-Led Zepplin frontman Robert Plant; they toured with him in 2005.

Their latest album, Under the Shade of Violets, nine years in the making, was recorded in France, Jordan, Egypt, Cuba, Brazil, Morocco, Venezuela… and features some 100 musicians, notably a young classical Egyptian singer Hend Ahmed.

Carlos Robles Arenas, the band's Mexican-born co-founder and drummer talks to RFI about years spent looking for the right voices and sounds and why music has to be “world”.

Orange Blossom play Paris’s Divan du Monde on 27 November.
