Suicide bomber hits French school in Kabul

Several people have been killed and a number of others injured in a suicide bombing in a French-sponsored school in Kabul that also houses a French cultural centre.

A suicide bomber detonated explosives inside Kabul’s prestigious Lycée Istiqlal on

Thursday, killing several people, according to Afghan and French  officials, and injuring at least 15.

The attack took place as a performance of a play called Heart Beat; the silence after explosion was taking place adn about 100 people were in the audience.

The bomber is reported to have been 15-16 years old.

French officials said on Thursday evening that none of the dead were French nationals.

The lycée, in the centre of the Afghan capital and near the presidential palace and the foreign afffairs ministry, also houses a French cultural centre and has reputation for having tight security.

Earlier in the day a suicide attack on a military bus killed six soldiers.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack.

The last French combat troops pulled out of Afghanistan after President François Hollande's election in 2012, leaving 1,400 involved in training and logistics.

The  majoity of troops from the US-led Nato military alliance are due to leave Afghanistan by the end of the month and their combat mission will officially end on 1 January.
