Abkhazia not invited to the Sochi Winter Games

Issued on:

This past month, the world's attention has been on Sochi, host of the 2014 Winter Games. However, within sight of the bright lights in Sochi’s back yard lies Abkhazia, a tiny breakaway province in Georgia which fought a bloody war of secession more than 20 years ago. Since then, Abkhazia has remained in limbo. Mostly unrecognized as an independent state except for a few countries including its largest benefactor Russia, it was not invited to the forty billion euros Olympic party just up the road.
