Kashmir dispute resurfaces as India and Pakistan celebrate independence

Issued on:

India today celebrates its 66th anniversary of independence, a day after Pakistan on Wednesday celebrated its 67th independence day. The anniversaries also recall the begininning of a dispute between India and Pakistan over the state of Kashmir. Tensions re-emerged this month between the two neighbours over fatal incidents on their de facto border through Kashmir, known as the Line of Control, involving military and civilian casualties. RFI spoke to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chair of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, an umbrella organisation for parties advocating Kashmiri independence.
