Tensions on anniversary of Hong Kong handover to China

Issued on:

The 15th anniversary of the Hong Kong handover to China was marked yesterday amid rising tensions. Chinese president Hu Jintao swore in Hong Kong's new Executive Chief, Leung Chun-ying, calling on him to resolve deep disagreements. A great number of Hong Kongers are unhappy with China's rule over the territory and want greater democracy including free elections. And yesterday, more than 100,000 of them took to the streets in an annual mass July 1 protest. RFI spoke to Emily Lau, an opposition member of Hong Kong's legislative council.
