Renault to recall over 1,400 cars in China

French car-maker Renault is to recall more than 1,400 cars because of a fault with the steering system, China's quality watchdog has said.

were imported to China, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement Thursday.

The defect could make steering difficult and lead to safety hazards in "extreme situations", said the statement.

Renault has promised to repair the fault and return the cars to their owners.

Koleos SUVs made up about 10 per cent of Renault's sales in the country last year.

In 2009 Renault recalled 2,136 Koleos, also due to steering defects, according to previous Chinese state media reports.

"This is a preventive measure," said Lin Hua, the head of Renault in China.

The fault has not caused any accidents in China, he said.

French vehicle sales fell 7.6 per cent in November, with a slump in sales to individual owners of 20 per cent to 26,000 units. Over the year so far 11 million vehicles have been sold.
