Delhi Games chief charged with corruption

Indian police have charged Delhi Commonwealth Games chief Suresh Kalmadi and eight other people with fraud in the purchase of timekeeping equipment from a Swiss firm.

The Central Bureau of Investigation filed a 50-page charge sheet alleging that the 22-billion-euro contract was inflated by 15 million euros.

Kalmadi, 66, was arrested last month and was already in prison. He was previously accused of "wrongfully restricting and eliminating competition" from other prospective suppliers of timekeeping equipment.

Swiss Timing, the Swiss firm involved, has denied any wrongdoing.

Politician Kanimozhi, who uses only one name, also fell fowl of judges Friday.

A New Delhi court ordered that she be remanded in custody over the 28-billion-euro telecom scandal which has shaken Indian politics.

Kanimozhi, who is an MP and daughter of Dravida Munatttra Kazhagam (DMK) leader M Karunanidhi, denies accusations that she accepted bribes worth 32 million euros.

Former telecoms minister A Raja, who is also a DMK member, is already in jail awaiting trail in the case.
