A search has been launched between the West Indian islands of Martinique and Dominica after the French citizens were reported missing in a sea that was particularly stormy thanks to the hurricane, the French transport ministry said Monday.

A customs airplane has been sent to fly over the area.

Hurricane Sandy caused damage in the Atlantic and claimed about ten lives in the West Indies before being downgraded to a tropical storm on Saturday, subsequently returning to hurricane strength.

Public transport has been closed down in New York and officials have ordered the evacuation of 375,000 people from areas at risk of flooding, while 7,400 US national and international flights have been cancelled.
