Tornadoes kill at least 13 in US midwest

Violent storms killed at least 13 people in the US’s midwest and south on Wednesday. The storm system followed the tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri, where rescue workers were still searching for survivors and shocked residents were digging their belongings out of the ruins of their homes.

in critical condition.

The belt of severe weather stretched across Oklahoma, northern Texas and Kansas, where two people died when high winds hurled a tree into a van on a highway, according to the state's emergency management agency.

The storms were centred on western Arkansas, Missouri, and western parts of Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi.

Much of Illinois and Indiana were on tornado watch Wednesday.

The storms are the latest in a series of storms which have cost hundreds of lives in  the US this year.
