Zimbabwe’s prisons have suffered doubly from the country’s economic problems. There is not enough money to maintain the institutions, leaving prisoners in sub-standard conditions.

But also, there are not enough staff to sit on review boards – leaving some mentally-ill prisoners who are fit to be released literally trapped in the system.
But some of this is beginning to change, slowly.
