Zimbabwe’s prisons have suffered doubly from the country’s economic problems. There is not enough money to maintain the institutions, leaving prisoners in sub-standard conditions.

But also, there are not enough staff to sit on review boards – leaving some mentally-ill prisoners who are fit to be released literally trapped in the system.

But some of this is beginning to change, slowly.

Columbus Mavhunga reports from one prison in Zimbabwe’s second city, Bulawayo about 500 kilometres southwest of Harare.
