Kiswahili in Kenya series part 1/5

Issued on:

Kenya’s coast is full of architectural and linguistic reminders of the region’s centuries-old relationship with Arabic countries like Oman. The Kiswahili language itself grew from a fusion of coastal Bantu languages and Arabic. Until today, many Swahili people along the coast still have familial, cultural and religious ties to Arabic countries. In the first part of our series - Kiswahili in Kenya - RFI reports from Kenyan islands in the Indian Ocean.
