In the 1970s, the United Kingdom expelled thousands of people from their homes in the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean in order to allow the United States to establish a military base there. The entire population was sent to Mauritius and the Seychelles. Four decades later, residents are still fighting for their right to return, and are upset at the British government’s decision to turn the islands into the world’s largest marine reserve. RFI spoke to Sabrina Jean, the new chair of the UK Chagos Support Association in London.
