Morocco sentences 24 Sahrawi activists

Issued on:

24 people from the Western Sahara have been sentenced in Morocco, for the murder of 11 people, including security forces, in 2010. The accused had been part of a peaceful protest camp called Gdim Izik, which was demolished by Moroccan security forces. They had been held for two years before being put on trial in a military tribunal in Rabat. Eight of the defendants were given life sentences, four received 30-year prison terms, and another 10 were given 20 to 25 years in prison. RFI spoke to Michael Ellman, a lawyer who observed the trial and the verdict.
