Mend threatens bombing campaign ahead of Nigeria elections
Nigerian militant group Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta is threatening to attack oil facilities ahead of April general elections.
The group will "soon commence with simultaneous bomb blasts and attacks on oil installations in the Niger Delta and other strategic locations in Abuja and Lagos state of Nigeria", it said in an e-mail statement late Sunday.
Mend claimed responsibility for bombings in Abuja in October that left several people dead.
The group is fighting for a bigger share of Nigeria's oil wealth for the people of the Niger Delta.
Nigerian police say they are taking the threat seriously.
“Our intelligence units are out there,” said police spokesman Yemi Agayi. “We call Nigerians with useful information to come forward. Our anti-terrorist is moving out our bomb disposal unit and I can assure that Mend will not be able to carry out its threat.”
