"They are accused of faking a robbery and filming it in order to raise money" for a local cultural and sports association, according to police who said they "had no authorisation to film in a sensitive area."

The three Senegalese are members of the association, but no information is available as to the identity of the two French nationals.

They have been taken into custody in the Casamance town of Sedhiou.

Casamance is separated from the rest of Senegal by the Gambia, and a separatist rebellion against Senegalese control has festered since 1982.

The region is facing fresh violence, with three Senegalese soldiers killed on Sunday bringing the number of soldiers killed since December to 15.

On Monday, the Senegalese government rejected a request from separatist rebels to hold an independence referendum for the region.

President Abdoulaye Wade last week asked his government to swiftly come up with a social programme to reintegrate former rebels.
