Oops! The art of covering mistakes (or not!) when you are live …

By Susan Owensby

This week on The Sound Kitchen, you’ll hear the answer to the quiz about the Academy Awards ceremony. There’s listener news, some great music - and of course, the quiz. Just click on the arrow in the photo and enjoy!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to The Sound Kitchen. You can catch the programme on-the-air every Saturday at 6:15, 7:15, 14:45 and 16:45 universal time. You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and tune in every Saturday.

For our DX enthusiast friends: Our shortwave frequency is 9675 kHz on the 31m band, from 06.00 to 07.00 UT every day. We’ve had reception reports from Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Russia, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US, and although the frequency is “aimed” (or however that works) towards the African continent, give it a try. You never know … and be sure and send us your reception reports. Maybe we can get more time, which would be wonderful.

You can also hear our programs on WRMI (http://www.wrmi.net/) and WRN (http://www.wrn.org/listeners/). These broadcasters diffuse our programs out of the goodness of their hearts, but unless you tell us how you heard us, we have no way of knowing … so do write and tell us how you listen to us.

A hearty welcome to four new official RFI Listeners Clubs! Two are in Bangladesh: the Karatao RFI Radio Listener Club in Sirajganj, with Shariful Islam as president, and the RFI Modhumala Radio Club in Chapai Nawabganj with Sahadat Hossain as president. The other two new clubs are both in India: the RFI Club Delhi, Mahesh Jain, president, and the RFI Mahila Shrota Sangha (RFI Women Listeners Fan Club) in Hariharpara, Nafisa Najim, president.

If you would like to create an official RFI club, or transform your existing listeners club into an RFI club, click on the link at the bottom of this page for information on how to get started.

There are new RFI Listener’s Club members to welcome, too. Adita Prithika from Tamil Nadu State in India; Abdikadir Elmi from Nairobi, Kenya; Ogban Ethothi from Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria; Shohel Rana Redoy from Dhaka, Bangladesh; Pradip Chandra Kundu from Tripura, India; Itumeleng Mokhele from Roma, Lesotho, and Fatima Zahra Rahmani from M'sila, Algeria.

This week’s quiz:On 4 March, I asked you about what was possibly one of the biggest mistakes every made on live television, which happened during this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announced the wrong movie for “Best Picture”.

I asked you to send in three answers:

1) Which film did the two mistakenly announce as the winner?
2) What is the name of the film which really did win “Best Picture”?
3) In which two other categories did the real “Best Picture” win awards?

The answer is:
La-La Land was the film they mistakenly announced as the winner. Moonlight is the real “Best Picture” winner. Besides “Best Picture”, Mahershala Ali won “Best Supporting Actor” and Barry Jenkins won for “Best Adapted Screenplay” - Moonlight is based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney.

The winners are: Sanusi Isah Dankaba from Nasarawa State, Nigeria, and four RFI Listeners Club members: Selva Raj from Tamilnadu, India; Jean Marcel Forget from Attleboro, Massachusetts; Ralf Urbanczyk from Eisleben, Germany, and Hans Verner Lollike from Hedehusene, Denmark.

Congratulations winners!

Here’s the music you heard on this week’s program: Mozart: the first movement of the piano concerto No. 15 in B-flat Major, K. 450, performed by Murray Perahia, and a traditional piece from Afghanistan, performed by the Ensemble Zohra with the Geneva Youth Orchestra.

This week’s question ... you'll have to listen to the show to participate. You have until 8 May to enter this week's quiz. The winners will be announced on the 13 May program. When you enter, be sure you send your postal address in with your answer, and if you have one, your RFI Listeners Club membership number.
